RECO, a prefix for recovery, reconnection, reconciliation, and recognition, was founded in April 2012 by Dave Niknafs. A prefix by definition, is the start or introduction of something, therefore, RECO is the starting point for the disconnection that occurs in substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring disorders, something our founder Dave had firsthand experience with.
Dave struggled at an early age, abusing prescription medications at the age of 13, which evolved into an addiction to heroin, methadone, suboxone, cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, other prescription drugs, and hallucinogens. After several failed attempts of rehabilitation at highly acclaimed treatment centers across the U.S., he finally found freedom in 2008, successfully completing a detox, residential program, and outpatient program for 12 months, which according to him, was what it took.
Dave became a voice in the Delray recovery community, mentoring and sponsoring others who shared similar struggles. His sponsor recommended he work in the industry, as he felt Dave had a genuine way of communicating with people. Dave found employment at a facility, working his way from a behavioral specialist to a director. It was at this facility that Dave would meet Brian Greenblott, his future partner, best friend, and mentor, who worked in the Admissions department.
Dave left that facility to take an Executive position at a competing facility, where he began to develop his own ideas of creating a program with core values of trust, transparency, support, empathy, and unity, things important to him that weren't woven in the fabrics of the facilities he was employed at. While working, Dave attended business courses at Florida Atlantic University, while subsequently starting two sober living homes for men as a passion project. What started as a passion project, became Dave's legacy, a new approach to substance abuse and mental health recovery.
